The 3-1 Easter Monday defeat to Millwall was the straw that broke the camel’s back for the Norwich board. A run of two wins in the last 14, a streak that has seen the Canaries drop down to 14th in the table, ultimately cost Johannes Hoff Thorup his job this week.
Jack Wilshere takes over interim charge for the final two games of the season as Norwich look to end what’s been an underwhelming campaign on a high.
Two of the Championship’s top four goalscorers – Borja Sainz (17) and Josh Sargent (15) – ply their trade for Norwich, so the board had every right to expect more from Thorup. In the final third, the Norfolk-based side have excelled having scored 67 league goals this season; only promoted Leeds (89) have struck more times in England’s second tier.
The defensive struggles ultimately derailed Norwich’s promotion push. Indeed, 66 goals conceded is the fifth most in the division, and more than relegation threatened Luton (64). For the neutrals, Carrow Road was the place for entertainment.

Another mid-table finish leaves supporters frustrated, and it’s vital that the board get the next manager appointment right if they are to launch a sustained and successful push for promotion. Wilshere has the perfect opportunity to prove his worth for the Canaries, and the former Arsenal midfielder is currently at 5/1 to be the next permanent Norwich boss.
Norwich see out the campaign against playoff chasing Middlesbrough and the welcome of Cardiff, the Bluebirds incidentally under the watchful eye of another ex-Arsenal star as Aaron Ramsey takes over for the final couple of games.
Who is the favourite to be the next Norwich manager?
The favourite to be the next Norwich manager is the club's former defender Russell Martin. The 39-year-old spent the bulk of his playing career at Carrow Road and a return to Norfolk makes sense. Martin is currently at 2/1 on BetVictor to take over the reins in Norwich, and he’d prove an exciting appointment that would quickly win over supporters.

While his reputation took a hit following Southampton’s ill-fated return to the Premier League, Martin would implement a brand of football that would see Norwich dominate opponents. Hold on to Sainz and Sargent, and Martin’s return could be perfect for all involved.
Current Lens boss Will Still is another at 5/1 to take over at Norwich, the 32-year-old once again impressing in France’s top tier, however a lack of English managerial experience may hinder his chances.
Liam Rosenior, another impressing in Ligue 1, is at 6/1, so too is former Wolves head coach Gary O’Neil, the latter out of work since his sacking back in December. Steve Cooper and Sean Dyche, two managers with experience in both the Championship and Premier League, are at 8/1 and 10/1, respectively.
The end of the season can’t come soon enough for Norwich, who are in no danger of relegation and have seen their playoff push completely fall apart in recent weeks. Bring in the right man to succeed Thorup, however, and a Premier League return next year is certainly a possibility.
